Groupon – boom or bust?

In June this year, online daily deal site Groupon filed for an IPO at a price that valued the two-and-half year old company at more than $20bn, hoping to capitalise on the biggest investor stampede into web start-ups since the dotcom bubble burst a decade ago. Groupon takes a commission from the merchants that provide the services, and in the first three months of the year its revenue totalled $645 million.

This week saw the Dutch Parliament passed a law stopping mobile operators from blocking or charging extra for voice calling done via the net. This is likely to make the Dutch the first in Europe to use Skype, WhatsApp, a free text service, and other web-based services on Smartphones for no extra charge.

This week, the first person in Scotland to be convicted of illegally sharing music files online was sentenced to three years probation. Anne Muir admitted distributing £54,000 worth of copyrighted music files by making them available to others via a peer-to-peer file sharing application, although she did not use this for any personal financial gain. She was convicted under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.
